GEO for Founders: How To Become "The Answer" in ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Generative engine optimization, GEO, starts from a fact most marketing teams have not internalized: you are no longer competing for clicks, you are competing for citations. The search interface is becoming an answer rather than a list of links. Pew Research found that users who encounter an AI summary on Google click through to traditional results less often than users who do not. You can rank and still not get the visit, because the visit increasingly does not happen. What matters is being included in the answer itself.

For founders, the most practical GEO shortcut is hiding in plain sight, and it is Reddit.

Why Reddit keeps surfacing in AI answers

Two reasons, one about language and one about economics. People discuss products on Reddit in decision language, best X for Y, X vs Y, what is the catch, which maps almost word for word onto the questions people ask AI tools. And Reddit's content is now formally valuable to the engines: Reuters reported Google licensing Reddit data at around $60 million per year for AI training. A brand absent from Reddit is not just missing a social channel. It is missing the corpus that increasingly shapes how its category gets described.

GEO is not SEO with a new name, either. The useful academic anchor is the Princeton-led GEO research, which found that specific content improvements, citing reputable sources, adding statistics, including clear definitions, using grounded comparisons, increased visibility in generative engine responses by up to roughly 40% in their evaluations. Every one of those improvements is unsexy, and every one of them is also exactly what Reddit upvotes. The two systems reward the same writing, because one is trained on the other.

The loop we build for clients

Pick your answer questions first, and make them category questions rather than brand questions: best [category] for [use case], [category] alternatives, what to watch out for when buying [category]. These are the questions AI tools get asked daily and the ones buyers ask right before spending.

Publish the canonical explanation on your own site, structured, specific, and cited. This is where most brand blogs fail: they publish vague thought leadership, which is not citeable, so it does not travel. Write instead the piece your smartest prospect would forward internally, with constraints, failure modes, decision checklists, and real external citations. A working heuristic: write like you are trying to survive an aggressive comment section, because downstream, you are.

Then adapt that material into Reddit-native contributions in the threads that already shape your category. Not link drops. The post or comment must stand alone as an answer; the deeper write-up is there for whoever asks. On one software engagement, the category's threads were dominated by outdated assumptions, and the competitors "winning" the AI answers were not better products. They were simply described more often, so the answers inherited their framing. The fix was boring and it worked: publish the clean explainer, then participate consistently in the threads with specifics and citations until the category's recorded conversation caught up with reality.

Build defensible claims or do not make them. Reddit's rules and its users both punish fuzzy claims, and AI systems inherit the punishment: a brand whose public record is full of challenged, unsourced assertions trains the whole internet, humans and models alike, to distrust it. "Here are the three scenarios where this works, and here is the evidence" is the sentence structure that gets quoted.

The signals that it is working

Watch for your brand appearing in "alternatives" threads without you posting. Third parties citing your explainer. Branded search lift after strong thread activity. And the clearest tell of all: prospects arriving on sales calls using the community's language rather than your website's language. When the words change, the narrative has moved.

You can also measure it directly rather than waiting for anecdotes. We track fixed sets of buyer-style prompts daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews for every client, so "are we the answer yet" is a number that moves weekly instead of a feeling. Founders doing GEO seriously face a constraint that is never ideas and always execution: finding the right threads, writing content that survives scrutiny, and keeping everything compliant, consistently, for quarters. If you can hold that consistency you do not need viral moments. You need steady presence in the conversations that decide deals, and if you want help building it, we are here: cal.com/aodhan-upvote/30min.
