    The starting point

A consumer fintech where trust is the bottleneck. On Reddit, the default reader posture is suspicion: hostile comparisons, 'what's the catch' threads, and users actively warning each other off anything that reads like a growth play.

At the start of the engagement, brand presence sat at 3 of 49 tracked Reddit URLs (6%). Across the first 14-day reporting window, AI chat answers in our tracked prompt set named the brand twice, both in long brand-list answers where the brand was not the lead recommendation.

    What we built

We treated compliance as the design constraint, not an obstacle. Before posting anything, we agreed with the client on what could be claimed, what required substantiation, and what required explicit disclosure. Without that, fintech Reddit becomes incident response.

The participation strategy centered on the questions that actually drive conversion in this category: 'what's the catch', 'edge cases', 'how do you make money', 'what the fees actually are', 'what protections exist if something goes wrong'. These are the same questions LLMs answer when generating recommendations, which is why the work produces both Reddit movement and AI movement from the same content.

Where participation came from a founder or expert voice, it was structured around specificity and constraints, not persuasion. When the product was wrong for a user, the comment said so. Admitting constraints is often the fastest path to credibility in skeptical categories.

Disclosure rules were treated as non-negotiable. Where promotional behavior was restricted, we leaned into educational contribution and reactive participation rather than forcing posts that invite backlash.

    How we measured

Engagement ran for 150 days, structured as 10 rolling 14-day reporting cycles. The reporting cadence stayed the same as other engagements; the content moderation overhead was higher because of compliance review.

Brand presence is the count of tracked Reddit URLs (URLs AI chats pulled as sources in the period) where the brand was named in the AI's answer text alongside the URL, OR where we had placed a comment at any point. Both numerator and denominator are observable.

AI answers naming the brand comes from a third-party AI search monitoring layer running a fixed prompt set against ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews on a daily schedule. The Reddit-citation subset is calculated by inspecting the sources array on each chat where the brand was named, and counting those that include any reddit.com URL. The further subset (cited a thread where we have placed comments) joins that against our internal posted-comment database.

Branded search lift is measured via the client's search console after high-signal threads went live; subreddit-owned views is the total view count on posts inside the small set of subreddits where the brand has consistent presence.

What this proves (and what it doesn't)

What this generalizes to: regulated categories where every post has to survive a screenshot. The reporting cadence is the same as a less constrained engagement; the difference is in throughput per cycle (lower) and in the quality bar (higher). The standardized cycle report exposes both honestly, which is what allowed the client's compliance team to stop treating the program as a risk surface.

What this does not prove: that the same arc works for a fintech with no internal expertise to draw on. The participation worked because the founder and product team had defensible answers to the hard questions. A program that tries to manufacture those answers from the outside will not produce the same AI answer movement, because models cite content that holds up.

In categories where skepticism is the default, you do not win by being louder. You win by being the clearest defensible answer in the threads buyers and models both read.
