Reddit AEO: How Reddit Threads End Up Inside ChatGPT Answers

Reddit AEO, answer engine optimization through Reddit, rests on a mechanism most marketing teams have never actually watched happen. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a buying question, the model does not consult a private opinion formed during training. For current, comparative questions it searches the live web, retrieves a set of sources, and compresses what they say into three to five names with reasoning attached. The answer is only ever as good, and as biased, as that retrieved layer underneath it.

Watch the retrieved layer for any commercial category for a few weeks, which is what we do daily across client accounts, and two things become obvious. The same URLs recur constantly: a few review platforms, a few publisher listicles, and a persistent core of Reddit threads. And the whole influential surface is small, usually 40 to 80 Reddit URLs per category at any given time. Not thousands of pages. Dozens. That is the entire battlefield most brands do not know they are losing on.

Perplexity makes this auditable in the most literal way possible: it publishes its sources next to every answer, and almost nobody reads them. Run your category's buying questions through it today and you can see exactly which threads are speaking on your behalf, or your competitors'.

    Why Reddit specifically

Answer engines need decision language: pros and cons, failure modes, "I switched from X to Y because," constraints and tradeoffs written by people with no stake in the sale. Reddit produces more of it than anywhere else on the open web, pre-sorted into topic communities and adversarially quality-checked by downvotes and replies. Reddit's licensing deal with Google, reported at roughly $60 million per year, formalized what retrieval patterns already showed: this corpus is treated as a premium source of how products actually get evaluated.

The consequence for brands is blunt. If the 40 to 80 threads feeding your category's answers describe you inaccurately, or not at all, then every AI answer built from them inherits that description. We measured this precisely with a cybersecurity SaaS client: at baseline, competitors were named in 73% of the AI answers in their category, and the client in zero. Not because the competitors were better. Because they were present in the retrieved threads and the client was not.

    What actually moves AI answers

The Princeton-led research on generative engine optimization found that content improvements like citations, statistics, and clear definitions measurably increase visibility in generated answers, with gains reported up to around 40%. Notice what that list is: the same properties Reddit users upvote. Specific beats vague, evidence beats claims, in both systems, because one system is trained on the other.

So the work of Reddit AEO is not a trick. It is presence engineering across a known URL set. Map the threads engines retrieve for your category's buying questions. Contribute answers to those threads that are accurate, specific, and durable enough to survive both the community's scrutiny and a language model's synthesis. Track a fixed set of buyer-style prompts daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and watch whether the answers start naming you, and whether the answers that do cite the threads you worked in. That last link is the attribution: with our cybersecurity client, when their AI mentions reached 18 per two-week window, 12 of the 18 cited a thread our team was active in.

    What does not work

Prompt-stuffing your own site with "best X" pages and hoping, because the engines weight third-party corroboration over self-description for exactly the reason buyers do. Spamming threads with brand mentions, because moderators remove them and the models retrieve the cleaned-up thread. And manipulation in any form, because the surface is public and permanent: the thread calling out your fake accounts gets retrieved too, and language models are extremely good at summarizing a scandal.

One nuance worth keeping in view: the source mix shifts. Reddit's weighting across engines moves month to month, listicles gain and lose ground, and no single surface is guaranteed to stay dominant. The durable strategy is not "be on Reddit," it is "be the most defensible answer wherever the engines look," with Reddit as the highest-leverage surface right now.

Short answers to the questions we get weekly

AEO, GEO, SEO: what is the actual difference? SEO optimizes for rankings in a list of links. GEO and AEO, near-synonyms in practice, optimize for inclusion in a generated answer. Rankings are the input, answers are the output, and Reddit threads sit unusually close to the output because engines retrieve them directly when buyers ask comparative questions.

Which engines should we track? ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cover most buyer exposure today, with Perplexity worth adding in technical categories where its user base concentrates. Track all of them with the same fixed prompt set, because source mixes differ per engine and the differences are informative.

Can we audit this ourselves before hiring anyone? Yes, this afternoon. Ask each engine your category's five biggest buying questions, read which sources the answers cite, and note how often your brand appears. Perplexity lists its sources openly. That manual audit is a rough version of the baseline we run daily with a fixed prompt set, and it is usually enough to show whether you have a problem.

The starting point is the same for every brand: find out what the retrieved layer currently says about you. We run that baseline, your category's tracked threads, your presence in them, and your current share of AI answers, in the first two weeks of every engagement.
