What to Measure on Reddit When CTR Lies

Reddit marketing measurement breaks the moment you import it from paid social, because CTR is a convenience metric, not a truth metric. On Reddit it systematically understates impact, since the channel's best outcome is a buyer who reads, trusts, and acts later: a branded search that evening, a direct visit next week, a Slack message to a colleague, a line in a procurement spreadsheet. None of those show up as a click on the thread.

The problem is compounding from the AI side too. Pew found that Google users who encounter an AI summary click through to results less often than those who do not, and the AI answers themselves are built partly from the same Reddit threads. Influence keeps flowing. Clicks stop being where it is visible. If your measurement cannot see mindshare, it will quietly sabotage your strategy by defunding the things that work.

Here is the stack we run instead, in three layers plus the one that finance actually respects.

Layer 1: in-thread intent signals. The early indicators, readable within days. Comment quality: serious questions versus jokes. Saves and shares, which are quiet intent. Comparison language appearing in replies, "X vs Y," "worth it," "alternatives," which means decision-stage buyers are present. You are watching for evaluation behavior, not applause.

Layer 2: downstream demand capture. Where Reddit shows its hand a week or a month later. Branded search lift in the days after high-signal threads. Direct traffic and return visitors. And self-reported attribution done properly: a "where did you hear about us" field on forms and a standing question on sales calls, with Reddit and AI tools listed as explicit options. Self-reported data undercounts, which is the correct direction to be wrong in. One B2B software client of ours had thoroughly unimpressive CTR while inbound calls started repeating the exact phrasing from a thread we had worked in. CTR never saw it. Sales heard it weekly.

Layer 3: share metrics with denominators. This is the layer most agencies skip because it holds them accountable. The share of your category's tracked Reddit threads, the 40 to 80 URLs that Google ranks and AI engines retrieve, where your brand appears. And the count of AI answers naming your brand from a fixed prompt set run daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. These numbers move week over week, they have denominators, and they cannot be padded with activity. A vendor reporting posts shipped and karma earned is reporting effort. These two numbers report outcome.

The finance layer: incrementality. When spend gets big enough to argue about, run experiments. Reddit's own Brand Lift and Conversion Lift tools exist precisely because the platform works as a view-through channel, people see, do not click, and convert later by another path, and randomized exposed-versus-control measurement is the standard Kantar and others describe for exactly this situation. Holdouts and geo splits do the same job organically.

The cadence that keeps it honest: weekly, intent signals plus thread outcomes plus the two share metrics. Monthly, downstream capture, pipeline touched, and narrative movement. Quarterly, lift tests where feasible and the budget conversation they inform.

Setting up the share metrics is less work than it sounds. Write 10 to 15 prompts phrased the way your buyers actually ask, best X for Y, X vs Y for our use case, alternatives to X, is X worth it, and run them on a fixed daily schedule against each engine, logging which brands each answer names and which URLs it cites. Within two weeks you have a baseline nobody in your organization has seen before, and in most categories it is uncomfortable: brands typically start with presence in 4 to 10% of the threads engines retrieve, and zero to two answers naming them per window, while a competitor sits in most of the rest. Uncomfortable baselines are useful. They end the internal debate about whether the channel matters and start the one about who owns it.

CTR keeps a job in this stack, one job: it is a creative diagnostic that tells you whether a unit resonates in the first two seconds. It has nothing to say about whether you changed a buyer's mind, and pretending otherwise is how good programs get killed by their own dashboards. If you want this measurement stack running against your category, baseline included, it is the first thing we build for every client: cal.com/aodhan-upvote/30min.
